Age Ratings and Parental Controls

1. Age Rating System

The Frost Fussion platform uses the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) age rating system to mark content according to its suitability for different age groups. Our system complies with UK broadcasting standards and classification regulations.

2. BBFC Age Rating Categories

2.1 U (Universal)

Suitable for all ages from 4 years and over

• Content suitable for the whole family including young children
• Should be set within a positive framework and offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror
• If a work is particularly suitable for pre-school children, this may be indicated
• Discrimination, drugs, language (mild bad language only), nudity, sex and sexual violence should not feature
• Examples: Paddington, Mary Poppins, The Gruffalo

2.2 PG (Parental Guidance)

General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children

• Unaccompanied children of any age may watch, but parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children
• May contain mild violence, brief scary sequences
• Discrimination and drugs should not feature, unless clearly disapproved of
• Moderate language may be used, but not in a sexual or aggressive context
• Natural nudity may be permitted, but no sexual activity
• Examples: Harry Potter films, The Lion King, Matilda

2.3 12A / 12

Suitable for 12 years and over

12A - Cinema release: children under 12 may view if accompanied by an adult
12 - Video/streaming: no one younger than 12 may view or purchase

• May contain moderate violence, but should not dwell on detail
• Strong language (e.g., 'fuck') may be passed, but frequency and manner should be justified
• Sexual activity may be briefly portrayed, but sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers
• Discriminatory language or behaviour must not be endorsed
• Moderate physical and psychological threat permitted
• Examples: Spider-Man films, Pirates of the Caribbean, Doctor Who

2.4 15

Suitable only for 15 years and over

• No one younger than 15 may view or purchase
• Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury
• Strong language (e.g., 'fuck') may be frequently used, very strong language (e.g., 'cunt') may be used depending on context
• Sexual activity may be portrayed, but without strong detail
• Drug taking may be shown but should not be promoted or instructed
• Dangerous behaviour (e.g., hanging, suicide) should not provide instruction
• Examples: The Dark Knight, Deadpool, Breaking Bad

2.5 18

Suitable only for adults

• No one younger than 18 may view or purchase
• Adults should be free to choose their own entertainment, within the law
• Strong violence, gore, and explicit sexual content permitted
• Very strong language permitted
• Drug use may be depicted, though materials promoting illegal drug use are likely to be refused classification
• Examples: Game of Thrones, John Wick, The Wolf of Wall Street

2.6 R18 (Restricted 18)

Restricted to adults only - not available on Frost Fussion

R18 content is only available in licensed sex shops and is not carried on our platform.

3. Content Descriptors

In addition to age ratings, we use BBFC content descriptors (Consumer Advice) to provide additional information:

3.1 BBFC Consumer Advice

• Mild violence / moderate violence / strong violence
• Infrequent strong language / frequent strong language / very strong language
• Sex references / sexual content
• Drug misuse
• Scary scenes / threat / horror
• Discrimination
• Flashing images (photosensitive epilepsy warning)

3.2 Additional Content Warnings

Some content may contain additional warnings for sensitive topics:

• Self-harm or suicidal themes
• Sexual violence
• Domestic abuse
• Eating disorders
• Bereavement or grief themes

4. Parental Controls

4.1 Setting Up Parental Controls

Frost Fussion offers a comprehensive parental control system that allows parents to:

• Create children's profiles with restricted access
• Set maximum age rating for each profile
• Block specific titles or genres
• Require PIN code for access to content of certain age ratings
• Monitor children's viewing history
• Set time limits for viewing
• Disable the ability to change settings without PIN

4.2 How to Set Up Parental Controls

1. Log in to your account
2. Go to "Settings" → "Parental Controls"
3. Create a children's profile
4. Set age restrictions (U, PG, 12, 15, or 18)
5. Create a PIN code (4-6 digits)
6. Select specific restrictions and limits
7. Save settings

4.3 Children's Profiles

Children's profiles automatically filter content based on age:

• For young children (4-7 years): Only U content
• For children (8-11 years): U and PG content only
• For preteens (12-14 years): U, PG, and 12 rated content
• For teenagers (15-17 years): U, PG, 12, and 15 rated content

4.4 Time Limits

You can set viewing time limits:

• Daily viewing limit (e.g., 2 hours per day)
• Weekly limit (e.g., 10 hours per week)
• Time window (e.g., viewing only between 15:00-20:00)
• Blocking during school hours (Monday-Friday, 09:00-15:30)
• Bedtime restrictions (e.g., no access after 21:00)

5. Frost Fussion Kids Mode

Frost Fussion Kids is a special interface designed for children with:

• Colourful, friendly design suitable for young viewers
• Large icons and simpler navigation
• Exclusively children's content (U and PG rated only)
• No advertisements or commercial promotions
• Educational recommendations and STEM content
• Inability to access settings or exit Kids Mode without PIN code
• No search functionality to prevent access to inappropriate content

Our age rating system complies with:

• Video Recordings Act 1984 (as amended by Digital Economy Act 2010)
• BBFC Classification Guidelines
• Communications Act 2003
• Audiovisual Media Services Regulations 2014
• Online Safety Act 2023
• Children and Young Persons (Harmful Publications) Act 1955

8. Parental Responsibility

Although Frost Fussion provides tools to protect children, the ultimate responsibility for the content children watch remains with parents or legal guardians. We recommend:

• Actively setting up parental controls when creating an account
• Regularly reviewing children's viewing history
• Talking to children about the content they watch
• Watching some programmes together as a family
• Teaching children critical thinking about media content
• Being aware of age ratings and consumer advice
• Setting clear family rules about screen time and content

9. Reporting Inappropriate Content

If you believe that any content has an incorrect age rating or contains inappropriate material, please report it to us:

We will review each report within 48 hours and take appropriate action, which may include:

• Reviewing the age rating with BBFC guidance
• Adding or updating consumer advice
• Removing content if it violates our standards

Frost Fussion offers a special section of educational content marked with an "Educational" badge, which includes:

• BBC educational programmes (Bitesize, etc.)
• Scientific documentaries (David Attenborough series)
• Historical programmes and period dramas
• Language learning content
• Mathematics and science series
• Arts, music, and culture programming

This content is suitable for viewing in a school environment and recommended by UK educators.

For foreign content, we also display original ratings alongside BBFC classifications:

• USA: G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17 (MPAA)
• Europe: PEGI ratings for games
• Ireland: G, PG, 12A, 15A, 16, 18

12. FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change the parental control PIN code?

In "Settings" → "Parental Controls" → "Change PIN". You will need to enter the old PIN first.

Can I block a specific film or series?

Yes, in the title details click on "⋮" (more options) and select "Block this title".

What if a child sees something inappropriate?

Report it immediately to content@frostfussion.com. Consider tightening parental control settings and reviewing what age rating is appropriate for your child's profile.

Do parental controls work on all devices?

Yes, settings are synchronised across all devices connected to the account (TV, tablet, phone, computer).

Can my child change the parental control settings?

No, changing parental controls requires the PIN code that only you should know. Do not share this PIN with children.

What is the watershed time?

For live TV broadcast, the watershed is 21:00-05:30 when more adult content may be shown. Frost Fussion is on-demand, so parental controls replace the watershed system.
